A Forest Escape in Arizona’s High Country

Canyon Point Campground is nestled within the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests on the Mogollon Rim, a dramatic escarpment in central Arizona known for its cool, pine-scented air, rugged cliffs, and expansive views. Located at an elevation of about 7,500 feet, this campground offers a refreshing break from the desert heat and is a favorite summer destination for campers, hikers, and nature lovers alike.

A Glimpse Into the Region's History

The Apache-Sitgreaves National Forests were established in the early 20th century to preserve the high-country ecosystems and provide sustainable timber resources. The forests are named after the Apache tribes who originally inhabited the region and Lorenzo Sitgreaves, an explorer who led one of the first U.S. government expeditions across Arizona in 1851. The area around Canyon Point bears evidence of both Native American history and early pioneer settlement, with cultural sites and rugged trails once used for trade and migration.

What Makes Canyon Point a Special Camping Destination

Canyon Point Campground is more than just a place to pitch a tent. With over 100 campsites—some with electric hookups—it’s well-equipped for tents, trailers, and small campervans. Tall ponderosa pines and mixed conifer forests provide both shade and scenic beauty. The cool mountain air and quiet surroundings make it a peaceful spot for families, solo travelers, and couples alike.

What truly elevates Canyon Point is its proximity to outdoor recreation. The Rim Lakes Recreation Area is just minutes away, offering access to fishing, kayaking, and boating on Woods Canyon Lake and Willow Springs Lake. Several hiking trails start near the campground, including the Sinkhole Trail, a gentle 1-mile loop, and General Crook Trail, a longer, historic route with interpretive signs along the way.

For wildlife watchers, the forest is home to elk, mule deer, black bears, and a variety of birds. Evening walks through the campground often reveal the sounds of owls or glimpses of bats darting through the treetops.

Climate and Seasonal Travel Tips

Because of its elevation, Canyon Point enjoys a cooler climate than the lowlands of Arizona. Summer daytime highs typically range from the upper 70s to low 80s (°F), with nighttime lows dipping into the 40s or 50s. This makes it a perfect destination to escape the triple-digit heat found elsewhere in the state.

Spring and fall are also ideal times to visit, although cooler temperatures and possible frost at night are common in the shoulder seasons. The campground usually operates from mid-May through mid-October, depending on snowmelt and seasonal weather conditions.

Winter access is limited, as the area receives snowfall and some forest roads may close. However, those with snow-friendly rigs or snowshoes may find a completely different kind of solitude during the off-season.

Nearby Attractions and Day Trips

Beyond the lakes and trails, nearby towns like Heber-Overgaard and Payson offer small-town charm, with local diners, historical museums, and a chance to restock supplies. For those interested in geology and panoramic views, the Mogollon Rim Visitor Center provides interpretive displays and awe-inspiring overlooks of the 2,000-foot drop into Arizona’s lower elevations.

Another must-see is the Tonto Natural Bridge State Park, about an hour away, which features one of the world’s largest natural travertine bridges—perfect for a short hike or picnic.

Why It’s Worth the Trip

Canyon Point Campground delivers the full high-country Arizona experience: fresh pine air, star-filled nights, peaceful lakes, and trails that invite exploration. Whether you're fishing at sunrise, enjoying the crackle of a campfire in the evening, or just relaxing beneath towering pines, it’s the kind of place that draws you back year after year.

From history to hiking, this is a campground that blends natural beauty with convenient amenities—and it’s a fantastic destination for those traveling in a campervan or simply looking for a cool mountain retreat.
