A Glimpse into History
Nerstrand Big Woods State Park was established in 1945 to preserve a unique remnant of the “Big Woods” ecosystem—once a vast hardwood forest that blanketed much of southern Minnesota. As logging and agriculture reshaped the landscape, this patch of forest near the town of Nerstrand became one of the last protected pieces of that dense and diverse woodland. The park continues to protect rare plant species, including the federally endangered dwarf trout lily, found only in this region.
Hiking and Hidden Falls
One of the park’s biggest draws is the trail to Hidden Falls, a short and easy hike- for most. This scenic walk leads to a 20-foot limestone waterfall tucked deep in the woods. It’s a popular destination, especially on hot summer days when kids and adults alike wade into the cool, shallow waters to splash and relax. The trail is well-marked and peaceful, making it a favorite for casual strolls and nature photography.
The park also offers over 11 miles of hiking trails that wind through mature hardwoods, with great opportunities to spot wildflowers in spring and vibrant colors in the fall. Birders will appreciate the variety of species in the area, including owls, woodpeckers, and songbirds.
Camping Opportunities
Nerstrand Big Woods features a modest but popular campground with 51 sites, including 27 with electric hookups. While the sites are fairly close together, the thick tree cover provides shade and a quiet, woodsy atmosphere. The campground fills quickly—especially on weekends—so advance reservations are highly recommended. Facilities include showers, restrooms, and a seasonal dump station. For those seeking more seclusion, there are a few walk-in tent sites nestled farther from the main campground loop.
Things to Do in the Park
In addition to hiking and camping, visitors can enjoy picnic areas, interpretive programs at the visitor center, and nature observation throughout the year. The park is also a great destination in winter, with snowshoeing and snowmobiling available on designated trails when conditions permit.
Exploring the Surrounding Area
Just outside the park, the small town of Nerstrand offers a touch of local charm. Nearby attractions include the Valley Grove Churches—historic Norwegian Lutheran buildings surrounded by prairie—and the Thorstein Veblen Farmstead, a preserved homestead of the noted economist and social theorist. The River Bend Nature Center in Faribault is another nearby destination with additional trails and educational exhibits.
