Kilen Woods State Park is a naturally beautiful spot with rolling bluffs, restored prairie, and peaceful river views. Its small size and limited use make it a quiet escape for those looking to enjoy a short hike or a relaxing break in nature. The Sioux Trail, leading to Dinosaur Ridge Overlook, offers scenic views of the Des Moines River valley and is the park’s highlight for a brief visit.
While the landscapes are lovely, the park has a noticeably low-traffic feel. During our visit, the office lacked a welcoming atmosphere, which, along with the sparse activity, left the impression that it sees fewer visitors than other Minnesota state parks.
The campground is clean and set among natural surroundings, but for those looking for a warmer reception or additional amenities, nearby options—such as the KOA or the Harvest Host site at Fort Belmont—may feel more inviting.
Kilen Woods is worth a quick stop to enjoy its scenic trail and quiet beauty, but travelers seeking a more engaging or social camping experience might find better options in the surrounding area.
