Monson Lake State Park: Hiking, Camping, Fishing & History

History
Monson Lake State Park near Sunburg, Minnesota, was established in 1923 to preserve the area’s natural beauty and commemorate events connected to the U.S.–Dakota War of 1862. The park occupies land once settled by Norwegian immigrants, several of whom lost their lives during the conflict. Historical markers within the park share these stories, helping visitors understand the human history tied to the landscape.
Today, the park stands as both a peaceful retreat and a place of remembrance. Surrounded by glacial lakes, wetlands, and oak woods, it reflects Minnesota’s early settlement history while preserving the quiet natural setting that has defined this region for centuries

Hiking
Trails here are short, scenic, and relaxed—great for an unhurried hour on foot. The signature loop follows the wooded isthmus between Monson Lake and West Sunburg Lake with gentle grades and mowed tread. Expect frequent bird sightings in spring and fall; grebes, pelicans, herons, and migrating waterfowl work the shorelines while red-winged blackbirds chatter in the reeds. Evening walks often bring calm water and lively wildlife activity.

Camping
The intimate lakeside campground suits tent campers, smaller RVs, and campervans. Sites are level and close to the water, with a clean shower building and easy access to trails and the boat ramp. It’s a simple, peaceful setup: arrive, settle in, take a shoreline stroll, and be roasting dinner as loons call across the lake.
Fishing & Paddling
Anglers find walleye, northern pike, largemouth bass, crappie, bluegill, and perch. Launch from the ramp on Monson Lake and, if the breeze picks up, slip into sheltered coves or portage into West Sunburg Lake for calmer casts. Early mornings reward patient anglers; quiet paddles along the cattails offer close views of waterbirds and the occasional turtle basking on a log.

Wildlife & Nature
This is classic glacial country: shallow lakes, cattail marsh, and oak-fringed knolls. Spring and fall migrations can be excellent, with mixed flocks moving low over the water. Summer brings dragonflies, chorus frogs at dusk, and starry night skies reflected in the lake.
Trip Planning Tips
Monson Lake State Park offers a simple, relaxed camping experience without the crowds or complications found at larger parks. Pack in your drinking water, plan easy-to-prepare meals, and take advantage of the calm early morning or evening hours for paddling when the water mirrors the sky. For hikers, an evening loop can be especially rewarding—the soft light highlights the prairie grasses, and bird activity increases as the day cools. Bring binoculars, a camera, and a mindset for slowing down—this is a park meant to be savored, not rushed.

Traveling in a Mini-T Campervan
Campsites at Monson Lake State Park are generally on the smaller side—perfect for a Mini-T Campervan. Your van fits every site easily without needing pull-through pads or extra maneuvering. Some sites offer electric service; if you choose a non-electric site, the Mini-T’s solar-supported power system keeps lights, device charging, the refrigerator, microwave, and outlets running. Car-like efficiency keeps costs down so you can focus on the trails, the water, and a quiet evening by the lake.
